Performance Notes

× An adaptation of the Tchaikovsky opera/Pushkin poem, Onegin is not simply a shiny musical with catchy tunes and clever lyrics. This show rises to another level: It is a searing love story with authenticity that cuts through the song-and-dance spectacle and strikes the audience at its core. The emotion does not feel Broadway-musical surface, but hits Russian-literature depths.

When Evgeni Onegin visits the Larin family estate, his romantic charms stir passions long forgotten by its residents. Poet Vladimir Lensky’s romantic ideals are challenged (a duel!) after Onegin flirts with his fiancée Olga Larin, and even the sensible Tatyana Larin falls for the handsome rogue. The hit musical moves, shakes, and wakes audiences with its sweeping score, leaving the powerful question swirling in their minds: Look around, look around, look around, do you see someone worth dying for?

With book, music and lyrics by Amiel Gladstone and Veda Hille, Onegin had its world premiere in Vancouver, was held over twice, and won 10 of the 11 Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards in 2016 in the large theatre category. This is a not-to-be-missed production. It is spectacular.
